Creative Outpost is spotlighting Senior Colourist and former cinematographer Jack Caswell, whose experience behind the camera brings a distinctly photographic eye to the grading suite.
Caswell began his career studying cinematography at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts under ASC cinematographers Michael Chapman and Thomas Ackerman, before working as a Director of Photography across Los Angeles and New York. It was during this time his interest in colour formed, allowing him to develop his technical ability alongside his role as a cinematographer. It was this early experimentation, and years honing his craft that landed him his senior colorist role at Forager Collective. Over his 4 years there, he honed his craft, working across global commercial campaigns and independent features.
He relocated from LA to London last year to join Creative Outpost, bringing over a decade of experience, and an instinctive understanding of light, texture and composition to his work as a colourist.
Rather than seeing grading as a final technical step, Caswell approaches it as an extension of the filmmaking process, a chance to shape atmosphere, strengthen visual identity and push an image further.
Jack said: “I've always been fascinated by how colour changes the way people experience an image. My background in cinematography gives me a strong foundation, but the grade is where I can really explore atmosphere, emotion and visual identity.”
His commercial credits include campaigns for Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Dior, Google, Lululemon, Uniqlo and Filson, alongside independent features, documentaries and an ongoing collaboration with filmmaker Mickey Reece. His work has screened at Cannes, Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW and Fantastic Fest, while commercial projects have been recognised by AdWeek and the Webby Awards.
For Jack, however, the people behind the work matter as much as the finished image.
“The people are always the best part,” he said, “Working with talented directors, cinematographers and creative teams who trust each other is what makes the work meaningful. The best ideas come from being curious, staying humble and leaving your ego at the door.”
That collaborative approach is also central to his role at Creative Outpost, where Jack works across commercials, music videos, film and episodic projects. The studio’s CO Stream remote grading workflow also allows him to collaborate with clients internationally, with directors, agencies and cinematographers able to make creative decisions together in real time.
Creative Outpost Managing Director Danny Etherington said: “Jack brings something genuinely different to our team. His experience behind the camera gives him an instinctive understanding of how images are created before they arrive in the grading suite. He isn't someone who simply grades pictures. He challenges them, refines them and often finds something the rest of us hadn't seen.”
Jack joins Mark Horrobin and Alexandre Nerzic within Creative Outpost’s renowned colour department, bringing together complementary styles and experience across advertising, film, music and episodic work.
