The VFX team at Creative Outpost literally played with fire on the new Disney Plus series, Renegade Nell through production company Lookout Point. From adding fire to torches to creating a fire that popped and cracked with sparks from a moving burning rag, the team helped to set scenes alight in Sally Wainwright's action-packed fantasy drama.
The series stars Derry Girls alum Louisa Harland in the title role, playing a woman who unexpectedly becomes a notorious outlaw after being framed for murder and chosen for "protection" by a mystical spirit played by Ted Lasso's Nick Mohammed, who appears to possess Nell whenever she finds herself in a tough situation, giving her the ability to ruthlessly fight her way out.
The Creative Outpost team worked across three episodes enhancing a collapsing building with dust and debris, compositing background plates and digital matte paintings into scenes shot on blue/green screen, animating and compositing a fly bouncing against a window before being ‘zapped’ dead and a tumbling CGI apple falling into frame.
James ‘Krispy’ Cornwell who headed up the team said, “As with all longform projects, it takes the highest level of detail, both technically and creatively, to get a shot from ingest to delivery, often adjusting to new workflows and delivery specifications.
“For me it's always nice to see the time I've invested setting up the pipeline and workflow working smoothly, culminating in the delivery of the final approved EXR's.”
